Janelle Monae

Sitting around campus, waiting for class to start, I overheard someone on a microphone mention Janelle Monae. Turns out she has a show here in Frisco and was actually on campus.

Adrizzle put me onto her music a while back and the stuff he let me hear was unlike anything i've ever really heard before. A lot of people describe her as a "female Andre 3000" and that was basically my first impression of her - the singer Andre, not rapper. It's like hearing a little bit of broadway, opera and R&B in one.

When the host announced her, she came out with her entourage. The most memorable being a guy wearing a private school type sweater, stunners and a black wig - at least I think it was a wig. Sadly, she didn't perform. She talked about her new album and label (she's also down with Big Boi's Purple Ribbon All-Stars and Bad Boy Records) and then sat at a table to sign posters, cd's etc.

If you've never heard Janelle Monae's music, peep her myspace. She recently dropped her video for "Many Moons," which I think is her first single...

Here's "Sincerely, Jane," probably my favorite joint i've heard from here, off her first EP "Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase."

I can dig it...
